How to use Remove background
- Add a photo. If the background is plain, it is removed for you straight away.
- To choose yourself, tick off automatic removal, then click an area with the Magic wand, draw around it with the Lasso, or drag a Box over it.
- To keep a subject, draw around it with the Lasso set to “Keep inside, remove everything else”.
- Fix small spots with the Erase and Restore brushes. Press Undo if you go wrong, then download the PNG.
Why use this tool
A transparent cut-out lets you drop a product, logo, signature or stamp onto any other page, slide or design. Because this tool works by colour, it is fast, works on your own device, and never sends your picture anywhere.
What it can and cannot do
Colour-based removal is excellent for clean backgrounds such as a white product shot, a scanned signature or a logo on a flat colour. It cannot recognise a person or object the way an AI cut-out tool does, so a busy background like a street or a garden will not separate cleanly. For those pictures, use the brushes or crop the subject first.
Tips for best results
- Shoot on a plain wall or sheet, in even light, so shadows do not change the background colour.
- Use Remove “Background touching the edges” to keep white areas inside the subject, like a white shirt.
- Use Edge trim to remove a pale halo around the subject, and Edge softness to smooth a jagged outline.
- PNG keeps transparency, so save the result as PNG, not JPG.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose exactly what to remove?
Yes. Untick automatic removal and use the Magic wand, Lasso, Box or Erase brush to remove only the parts you pick. Undo steps back through your last ten changes.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. It is processed in your browser and stays on your device.
Why is some of the background left?
The background is not one even colour. Raise Tolerance, click a different part of the background to pick its colour, or paint over the leftovers with the Erase brush.
Why did part of my subject disappear?
Part of the subject is close to the background colour. Lower Tolerance, or paint it back with the Restore brush.
Is the picture made smaller?
Photos larger than 2560 px on the longest side are scaled down so that the tool stays quick on phones. Smaller pictures keep their full size.
