Change image background

Cut out a plain background and put something new behind your subject: a colour, a gradient, your own picture, or a blurred copy of the photo. It works best on photos with a clean, even background, such as ID photos, products and portraits against a wall.

How to use Background changer

  1. Add a photo. If the background is plain, it is found and replaced straight away.
  2. Choose what goes behind the subject: a colour, a gradient, your own picture, a blurred copy of the photo, or nothing.
  3. If part of the old background is left, click it with the Magic wand, draw around it with the Lasso, or paint over it with the Erase brush.
  4. Use Show original to compare, then download the picture.

Why use this tool

A new background makes a photo fit its purpose: a plain white or blue one for an ID or profile photo, a clean colour for a product, or a scene for a poster. This tool does it in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded, and there is no watermark or sign-up.

What it can and cannot do

The subject is cut out by colour, which works very well on plain backgrounds such as a wall, a sheet or a white product shot. It does not recognise people or objects the way an AI cut-out tool does, so a busy background like a street or a garden will not separate cleanly. For those photos, use the lasso to keep only the subject, or crop closer first.

Tips for best results

  • Photos taken against an even wall in soft light give the cleanest edge.
  • Use Edge trim to lose a pale halo around the subject and Edge softness to smooth a jagged outline.
  • For a passport or ID photo, choose White or Sky blue, and check the size rules of the place you are applying to.
  • Pick a background picture with a similar light direction to the subject so the result looks natural.
  • Save as PNG to keep a transparent background. JPG fills any empty area with white.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my own picture as the new background?

Yes. Choose “My own picture” and pick a file. It fills the frame, or you can stretch it to fit.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser and the photo stays on your device.

Why is some of the old background still showing?

The background is not one even colour. Raise Tolerance, click a different part of the background with Pick colour, or paint over the leftovers with the Erase brush.

Why did part of my subject disappear?

Part of the subject is close to the background colour. Lower Tolerance, or paint it back with the Restore brush.

What does the blurred copy option do?

It places a blurred version of your own photo behind the subject, which gives a soft, portrait-style look without needing another picture.

Is the picture made smaller?

Photos larger than 2560 px on the longest side are scaled down so that the tool stays quick on phones. Smaller pictures keep their full size.
